Virginia Dellinger, Community Servant

We were deeply saddened to learn that on August 5th, 2019, Virginia Dellinger, former GMVA Director, passed away after a brief illness. Virginia served with great distinction on the Village Association Board for over 20 years and gave countless hours volunteering in our community at various Grogan’s Mill events. Her bright smile and warm welcoming personality will be greatly missed. She is survived by her daughter Patty Schinzig and son Steve Schinzig and four grandchildren.

Welcome New Board Members

The GMVA recently welcomed new board members Andrew Coakley and Randy Brannen who were appointed to fill vacant positions. Andrew and his family have lived in Grogan’s Mill since 2013. Randy and his family moved here in 2012. Welcome to the Board and thank you for volunteering your time! We would like to thank outgoing board members Steve Potlock and Curt Hammock for their service to the GMVA.

Aquifers and Subsidence in Montgomery County

At our August meeting Neil Gaynor, a GMVA Director and MUD 6 Director, gave a presentation on Aquifers and Subsidence issues in Montgomery County. The following is a summary of his presentation:

Groundwater in subsurface aquifers is a significant part of our freshwater supply in Montgomery County. In The Woodlands, we use water wells to pump water from two aquifers, Evangeline and Jasper. The water in the deeper parts of these aquifers can be more than forty thousand years old. Recharge of aquifer water from rainfall is very slow, much slower than the rate of groundwater production. Consequently, with production of groundwater under such limited replenishment, compaction of the sediment grains will occur as water is extracted from the pore spaces between the grains. Such compaction will result in subsidence of the ground surface. GPS sensor stations in The Woodlands area have measured subsidence of over 10 inches since just 2001. A recent study of subsidence in Montgomery County using satellite radar data shows two types of subsidence. The first type is gentle and widespread, and the second type is concentrated along pre-existing faults. In the Grogan’s Mill area, the first type is prevalent as no faults are known to be present in our area. With the introduction of the groundwater reduction plan by the San Jacinto River Authority, subsidence has reduced significantly. In the future, we need to carefully manage groundwater extraction to be sure that subsidence is not an issue for us.

Battery Recycling – 2019 Village Challenge

Batteries – like numerous items – are recyclable, but not accepted at the sorting facility where our residential recycling ends up. To empower residents to recycle beyond our curbside carts, The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department has selected alkaline AA, AAA, C, D, and 9V Batteries for the annual Village Recycling Challenge held at the 3R Bazaar on Saturday, November 9, 8 a.m. to noon at The Woodlands Farmer’s Market. Last year, 3402 pounds of batteries were collected and kept out of the landfill. The GMVA is accepting batteries for our village at the Farmer’s Market every Saturday leading up to the event. You can deposit them in the labeled bucket at the market. Let’s win some money for our scholarship fund AND keep batteries out of the landfill.

The Woodlands Farmer’s Market at Grogan’s Mill

It’s never too hot at The Woodlands Farmer’s Market, though there are hot deals on fruits and vegetables, honey, olive oil, crafts, food, and more! The market is open every Saturday from 8AM until noon, rain or shine, at 7 Switchbud Place in the Grogan’s Mill Village Center. In addition to our regular lineup of vendors, we have live music and a food truck on most Saturdays. Bring your own bags to save on plastic. Check out our website or look us up on Facebook. Profits from Farmer's Market vendor fees are returned to our community through various philanthropic contributions, school donations, scholarships, and community programs.
